ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County commissioners will try to keep the downtown post office open.

Monday Albany businessman Johnny Williams went before commissioners to urge them to contact officials in an effort to save the branch.

Local officials were caught of guard by news last week that the Postal Service will close the branch when the lease in the old federal courthouse expires.

Commissioners agree it needs to stay.

"We feel that we are the leaders in the community.  We did not know.  And you just jump up and close something this historical, we need to take actions," said Muarlean Edwards, Dougherty Co. Commissioner.

The chairman directed the county attorney to find out the key players behind the closing and contact them.

The post office is set to close December 2nd.
