WORTH CO., GA (WALB) -
A man is behind bars tonight after being accused of setting fire to a mobile home in Worth County.
Ever since Friday morning at 5:45 when police got the call about a Worth County house fire, investigators have searched for answers as to how the mobile home on Fortune Road caught fire.
"There was a lot of destruction, very hot fire, there was a propane tank at the rear of the house that had caught on fire and was spouting off gas which added to the heat and everything," says Worth County Coroner, Johnny Johnson.
Not only was 64-year-old Betty Booth Bigler badly burned from the flames, but the man who she had been living with for nearly 14 years, 48-year-old Gregory Fulghum, died inside the home.
"Mr. Fulghum was laying on a sofa type thing, in very bad shape," says Johnson.
Fulghum was disabled and was unable to escape in time.
"He was probably an unrecognizable state, it burnt that bad," says Johnson.
The Worth County Sheriff's Department, along with GBI agents, started their investigation immediately and just one day later, arrested 31-year-old Michael Carlisle who currently lived in the home with the couple.
"The suspect has been picked up and put in the Worth County jail, charged with arson and murder," says Johnson.
Authorities have not revealed a motive or how they believe the fire was set.
Neighbors say Carlisle lived with the two for just a short time. They tell us the couple often took in boarders who needed a home.
