TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Tifton is painting the town pink to raise awareness of breast cancer.  The Tifton Merchants Association and Main Street Program officially kicked off Tifton's second annual "Paint the Town Pink" event.

The color pink decorates storefronts in downtown Tifton. It is for Tifton's second annual Paint the Town Pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"It is a visual aid for a reminder, we are encouraging everybody to go out and get mammograms, and we are bringing forth awareness, making certain that people understand the importance of breast cancer awareness and the resources that are available," says Lequrica Gaskins, Main Street & DDA Executive Director.

Leanne Hall is gunning for first place for the second year in the Downtown Window Decorating Contest.

"We try to incorporate something in your store and have something to do with breast cancer and of course you have got to have lots of pink," says Leanne Hall, Breast Cancer Survivor.

But this is more than just a fun event for Hall. She is also a breast cancer survivor.

"March 20th 2011, I was diagnosed with invasive ductile carcinoma," says Hall.

Tifton's Main Street Program won an award for their "Paint the Town Pink" event for the "Best Image Building Campaign" within the state of Georgia.

After Chemo and a double mastectomy she is now cancer free and excited to participate in this year's event.

"It is great to be apart of it and you also get to socialize with other ladies, especially the ones that have just been diagnosed who are terrified," says Hall.

Doctors say it's important for women to do self-exams because early detection is key to surviving breast cancer.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation Survivor's Celebration will be held at 10 AM Saturday at the Masonic Lodge on Kennedy Road in Tifton. Events will are scheduled throughout October.
