ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Shipments of contaminated steroid shots tied to a nationwide meningitis outbreak were sent to Georgia. A surgery center in Macon administered steroids to 189 people using drugs that have been tied to the New England Compounding Center that produced the drug.
Authorities say 17,000 vials of the injectable steroid produced at the Framingham, Massachusetts compounding pharmacy are suspected in a nationwide outbreak of fungal meningitis.
So far five people have died but no infections have been reported in Georgia.
The new England compounding center has recalled all 17,000 vials of the steroid and shut down operations.
Officials at Phoebe say their shots are safe. Anesthesiologist Chip Moree says Phoebe gets their medication for steroid injections from the UP-John company.
The contaminated shots came from the new England compounding pharmacy. So far, 35 people in six states have contracted meningitis.
All had received steroid shots for back pain, a highly common treatment. "Compounding pharmacies are regulated by the state. they do not have the same level of inspection that name drug manufactures are subjected to," said Moree.
He says if you've had an epidural steroid injection.and you are concerned, contact your physician and find out where they get their medication.
