ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A Domestic Violence Awareness Month observation at MCLB Albany today.

Nearly 200 Marines and civilians heard speeches from the Dougherty County Coroner and from the Bas Commander.

There was even a motorcycle ride from dozens of bikers clad in purple.

Base officials say today is about recognizing their role in the community and their duty to Marines who are stationed there.

Brenda Ray, the Health and Prevention Coordinator for MCLB said, "some of the same issues that the community has at large, the base may see some of those same issues. So it's important that our Marines and our families be able to recognize some of the symptoms of domestic violence."

The Georgia Department of Public Health says there were eight deaths in Dougherty County and nine more in Lowndes County related to domestic violence between 2009 and 2011.
