Posey wins NL batting title

Leesburg's Buster Posey becomes the first catcher to win the National League batting title in 70 years.

Posey was held hitless in two at bats against the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw Wednesday before he was taken out of the game in the 6th inning to rest for the playoffs.

Buster Posey's final regular season batting average is .336.

Nine points higher than the Pirates Andrew McCutchen.

He joins Barry Bonds as the only San Francisco Giants to win a batting title since the team moved west in 1958.

Boston Braves catcher Ernie Lombardi is the last catcher to win the NL batting title.

Minnesota's Joe Mauer won the American League title in 2009.

Buster Posey wins the title because teammate Melky Cabrera took himself out of the running two weeks ago.

Cabrera has been serving a 50-game suspension since mid-August after testing positive for testosterone.

Giants open the playoffs Saturday night in San Francisco against Cincinnati.
