Phoebe welcomes cancer study

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The American Cancer Society is trying to get people in Albany to take part in a study they hope will help save lives.

Community leaders and Phoebe Putney Hospital Staff helped kick off the Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study 3 at Phoebe Northwest Wednesday morning.

Organizers hope to sign up 400 people in Southwest Georgia. Once you're enrolled, researchers will compile information about you over the next 20 to 30 years hoping to determine things that cause and prevent cancer.

"It's going to take that kind of long term commitment from all of us. It's going to take our starting it and make it have a spiral affect," said Mayor Dorothy Hubbard.
