Historic Albany Post Office is closing

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Post Office branch in the old federal courthouse will close in two months. Critics say that will be bad for downtown.

Some folks who say they've been going to that post office for 40 years. Not only are they upset about how inconvenient this will be. But they worry about what kind of impact this will have downtown.

Every day, hundreds of folks file in and out of the downtown post office building checking their boxes or sending out mail. News of its sudden closing took many people off guard.

Johnny Williams says he's prepared to do whatever it takes to keep this downtown branch open. "It's devastation to the community of Albany not to have a postal service downtown."

He makes living shining shoes, and for years, he's been set up just feet away from the post office counters. "I got a good clientele from people checking their post office box."

With more than 1,000 post office boxes, he says the traffic flow from post office customers is how he makes his money. "It helped me stay in business like these other few businesses around here with the traffic. Look around."

But he's not letting it close without a fight. He's worried about the impact it will have on the downtown area. "Look at the people you see walking downtown- they are beginning to get a traffic flow."

But the Postal Service is a key component of this project to keep downtown thriving. He's urging folks to contact leaders in attempt to make a difference before they move out. "We hope our officials will get up. Do what they need to do, and talk with the post master in Washington to revaluate this decision."

Because without this traffic flow, he's not the only one who will suffer. "It's going to have a devastative effect on small business like myself. I don't do any more than shoeshines."

He plans to stay in the same spot, and postal employees will move to other locations. Some citizens plan to go before the commission next week to try and muster up support from the community.

The Post Office is scheduled to close when the lease expires on December 2nd.
