ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital kicked off flu shot season Monday afternoon.

Phoebe leaders were among the first to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated.

They hope this event will encourage you to get a flu shot.

All Phoebe employees and volunteers are required to get the flu vaccine.

Doctors say that's important for patient safety and to try to prevent a flu outbreak.

"If you go home and you have influenza then you may transmit that disease to your children, wife, husband or whoever you live with and it's also to protect our patients. If we have influenza and we're contagious or transmissible, we can pass the disease on to our patients," said Dr. Carlos Franco.

The CDC recommends anyone older than 6 months get vaccinated, but it's especially important for the elderly, pregnant women and people with compromised immune system.
