The Albany State Rams got back on track against Kentucky State on Saturday in front of 23,762 fans in the annual clash between historic African-American institutions at Soldier Field.
Albany State took the lead late in the first half and never gave it back in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. The Golden Rams scored first on running back Nathan Hoyte's 8-yard run. Dillan Fontaine added a 35-yard field goal with 10 minutes, 10 seconds left in the third quarter for a 10-0 lead.
Kentucky State (1-3, 0-2) broke the shutout with 7:44 left in the third quarter on Justin Williams' 20-yard touchdown run.
But with 13 minutes left in the fourth, Albany quarterback David Kooi connected with wide receiver Robbie Tubbs for an 18-yard scoring strike and a 17-7 lead. The Thorobreds cut the margin to 17-14 on Williams' 1-yard run with 1:09 left.
Hoyte rushed 28 times for 103 yards. ASU (2-3, 1-1) will play Lane in the Music City Classic in Macon.
