ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A non profit group spent the day planting fruits and vegetables in an Albany neighborhood.

Hip Hop Grows Up Inc. broke ground on a community garden at the entrance of Radium Gardens apartment complex.

A few weeks ago, students from Darton State College and Albany State University canvassed Radium Gardens neighborhood asking families questions about their health, fitness, and educational needs.

City Commissioners Tommy Postell and John Howard helped break ground on the garden.

The gardens are meant to improve health and fitness of the families in the area by providing them with something positive to do, and a place to grow produce.

"It is going to give them something positive to do, when you have things to keep you going, when you have things to keep you occupied, you aren't getting into trouble, you are staying off the streets, and we are just giving them something positive to do to help their community," says Jessica Dorsey, Hip Hop Grows Up Inc.

They hope to plant two more gardens in the Radium Gardens neighborhood and then branching off to other communities around Albany.

Dorsey hopes this will inspire other organizations to get involved in making Albany a better community.
