ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Emory University is getting an $8.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to launch an autism research center.

Nationally, one out of 88 children is autistic. In Georgia, the ratio is one out of 84.

An autism specialist in Albany says the grant could help find the cause of the developmental disorder and should benefit autistic children here in Southwest Georgia.

"It can impact us greatly if Emory is able to use some of the children that are in this area for their research, but even if they aren't able to do that, if they're able to get some answers it's going to affect every child that is currently diagnosed with autism," said Beckhom Behavioral Consulting Program Director Katrina Beckhom

Other partners that will participate in the research include the Marcus Autism Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and researchers from Florida State University.
