LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Lee County leaders say they're pleasantly surprised by how well a new wellness program for county employees is working.

More than 100 workers met regularly with health coaches.

Over 12 weeks, they lost an average of 6 pounds. 70% of at-risk participants lost weight.

One county employee told us he's happy he took part.

"I lost 12 pounds and that was a good thing and according to the blood work, my blood pressure went down  some and I just feel better," said Lee County Assistant Chief Paul Branch.

The county just got the first update on results. The program will continue and county leaders hope it will lower their health care costs.

Employees who participate get a discount on their insurance premiums.
