ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
An alert Dougherty County Sheriff's Deputy serving a civil paper uncovered what drug agents are calling a major Albany marijuana trafficker.
The deputy found five pounds of marijuana and almost $19,000 in the man's car when he ran from the deputy. The Deputy was just going to hand 27-year-old Kevin Griffin the civil paper and then leave if he had taken it.'
Instead Griffin ran, leading the deputy right to his huge stash of pot and money
Dougherty County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Travis Davis smelled the pot when running after Kevin Griffin. September 18th Davis went to Griffin's home on Waddell Avenue to serve a civil paper. The Deputy heard men in the backyard, and walked through the carport to talk to them, but they took off.
"The two subjects basically ran to the alley. He smelled a large odor of marijuana and discovered a large quantity of marijuana in the front seat of the vehicle, in one gallon zip lock bags," said Dougherty County Sheriff's Office Captain Craig Dodd.
Also in the console of his car, Albany Dougherty Drug Agents found in a folder with nearly $19,000 in cash and a gun.
"This is not just personal consumption. This is distributing. This is a major player in the game, and is obviously moving large quantities as you can see here. And has moved some from the large amount of money," said Albany Dougherty Drug Unit Commander Major Bill Berry.
Deputies had been searching for Griffin, and this morning got a tip he had returned to work at his job at Dunbar's BBQ on West Gordon, and they caught Griffin hiding in the kitchen. They also arrested the restaurant owner for trying to hide Griffin.
"Cory Dunbar, who had just prior to that told us he hadn't seen him and didn't know where he was was also arrested for misdemeanor obstruction," Dodd said.
Griffin is now facing drug and gun charges, thanks to the keen nose of the deputy serving a civil paper.
Drug agents say marijuana sales in Albany is big business right now, and this stroke of luck arrest came about because of law enforcement agencies working together.
Griffin is being held in the Dougherty County jail. Dunbar has been released.
