COLQUITT COUNTY, GA (WALB) -
Norman Park Police say a four-day meth binge is likely what triggered a high speed police chase.
Officers chased a motorcyclist for 20 miles Tuesday after he took off from a traffic stop.
He led them on a wild ride along back roads until his motorcycle conked out on him.
Motorcyclist Chad Wells topped speeds of 120 miles per hour during the chase that started around 5:30pm Tuesday night.
Police say Wells is a known drug user and they weren't surprised he ran from them.
The police dash cam video shows how quickly a normal traffic stop turned into a high speed chase.
Around 5:30 Tuesday afternoon Officer Bruner pulled 37-year old Chad Wells over because there were warrants for his arrest in Tifton.
As soon as the officer walked up to Wells' bike, Wells took off.
"Unfortunately its one of those things where folks make a bad decision to run from the police," said Chief John Brannen, Norman Park Police Department.
He led officers in and out of traffic at speeds of 120 miles per hour starting off on highway 319 then down narrow curvy country roads and blowing through busy intersections without taking a second look.
"He blew through the four way stop sign at doerun normal park road never stopped never slowed down if any very little," said Brannen.
Officers kept a good distance from him.
"In this particular case we knew he had already done some physical harm to family members so if he's going to hurt his family who is he going to hurt so we knew we needed to get this guy off the street," said Brannen.
And they're thankful, because if he was on busier roads this may not have been the outcome.
"Had this chase continued south on 319 and went into Moultrie, the pursuit probably would have been terminated," said Brannen.
After traveling 25 miles, Wells gives up on Wrights Chaple Road just south of Sumner, or as you can see here his motorcycle gives up on him.
"Whether he was high on meth or just tired of a pursuit he gave up you can see him put his kickstand up here and Officer Brunner is ordering him at gunpoint on the ground and he will get down on the ground," said Bruner.
Police found the components need to make a shake and bake meth lab on his bike.
"When he is not strung out on meth he's a good guy he'd give you the shirt of his back it just goes to show you what meth will do it really does," said Bruner
Police are thankful no one got hurt and they hope he learned a lesson and gets the help he needs.
Chad Wells faces nearly a dozen charges including driving on the wrong side of road and
Criminal Attempt to Manufacture Methamphetamines.
He told officers he wants help for his drug problem.
Tifton Police were already looking for Wells on family violence charges.
He remains in the Colquitt County Jail.
