MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -

Dolly and Bud Stringer met in an unusual way.

"We met when Dolly was on a date with my best friend," says Bud Springer as he laughs at the memories.

20 years and 2 kids later, the Stringers are still together. But the past 5 months have been a struggle to say the least.

"Dealing with cancer internally, it's a different issue," says Bud.

In April, Dolly was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, a battle the whole family was prepared to fight. In fact, in August, Bud shaved his head in support of his wife.

"Our 10 year old son was upset and he was like I didn't want two bald-headed parents," says Dolly.

He didn't know it then, but Bud would soon find out he too had cancer; finding a spot of stage 3 Melanoma on his now bald head.

"The outcome could have been very different in another 6 or 8 months," says Bud.

The Stringers are long time members here at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Moultrie and they say their faith, along with the support of the congregation has been the foundation in their fight against cancer.

"The outpouring of the church and the community have just been unbelievable, overwhelming at times, you know the generosity of people," says Bud.

"In something that appears to be a bad situation, there's so much good that can come out of it."

And friends say, the Stringers positive spirit is inspiring.

"They've been amazing, their spirit is strong, they're just ready to fight," says long time friend and neighbor, Carol Fleming.

So that these sweethearts can spend many more years together.

A 5-K race and one mile run called "Run for a Reason" is set for October 20, 2012, benefiting the Stringer family.

All proceeds will be donated to a special fun set up by First Presbyterian Church of Moultrie.
