The unemployment rate in the Southwest Georgia region declined to 8.2 percent in April, down two-tenths of a percentage point from 8.4 percent in March. The rate was 8.8 percent in April a year ago.More >>
A Dougherty County Commissioner may be appointed to the library board of trustees.
Monday, the Government Affairs Committee worked out a three-pronged recommendation.
They want to add at least one commissioner to the library board and request trustees come before the commission with a full report before the end of the year.
The last part of the recommendation is to delay the appointment of the commissioner(s) until the end of the year, when those on the library board will decide if they want to renew their term. If all the members plan on staying on the board, this plan will come back to the commission for further review.
The plan comes after the commission received numerous complaints about the sudden decision to close two library branches in June.
"We believe that adding a member of the board of commissioners will prevent that kind of situation from happening in the future. And that's why we're taking the action," said Gloria Gaines, District 5 Commissioner.
The plan will go before the full county commission at their next meeting.
