AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Hundreds showed up in Americus, Saturday, to recognize those who served our country.

The event took place on the campus Georgia Southwestern University, which honored Prisoners of War and soldiers missing in action.

The ceremony honored those POW and MIA soldiers and family members from the Korean and Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm and The War in Afghanistan.

Event organizers say the event is needed especially in this region.

"This region is the home of the National POW Museum and a lot of the country doesn't realize that. This is what I would call a DC Mall level museum right here in our midst. With that, it's the perfect venue to bring former American prisoners of war to the National POW museum," Rolling Thunder State Director Jim Moyer.

The service was a part of a three day long celebration to honor National Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Recognition Day.
