An East Albany woman is asking for help to recover a dozen rare coins stolen from her home earlier this month.
The coins are worth about $20,000 but she says their sentimental value is much greater.
Mary Williams Thomas feels violated. So far the police have not been able to recover her treasured coins, and she is hoping someone in the community might know where they are.
Thomas says September 7th she was at the hospital with her father when she got a call her home on East Tift Avenue had been broken into. She immediately found several items missing from her bedroom.
"I had a 40 inch flat screen right here on this stand right here. I had a Samsung Android, brand new phone, placed right here, " Thomas said.
But Thomas said it wasn't until the next day she found her most precious items, her coin collection, was missing from this purse. "And I had close to maybe twenty something thousand dollars in old coins that I had collected over the past 12 years. I was saving them for my grandchildren."
The minister at New Beginnings Missionary Baptist Church, Thomas said she started attending coin shows in Atlanta to put her collection together. Today after meeting with Albany Police Detectives again, she decided to ask the community for help finding her coins.
"They got to sell them, to sell them to someone. Like I'm saying if someone knows that someone has tried to pass them off, or if someone has recognized that they have these old coins in their possession."
This burglary has hit Thomas hard. The crooks broke in through the living room window, and Thomas has moved her bed in front of that window to make sure they don't come back.
"I truly am violated. And it hits on the inside, and it hurts."
She said those coins were going to be a special gift to her grandchildren, and now she hopes and prays someone can help her get them back.
Thomas said she is moving from her home as soon as she finds another house to live in. For now she hopes someone can help her get her treasured coin collection back.
