Do. Co. Commissioners delay vote on health insurance premiums

Posted: Updated:

Dougherty County commissioners delay a vote on an increase in employee health insurance premiums.

Twenty public works employees showed up to the county commission meeting Monday to voice their concerns about the increase.

The county's insurance consultant projects a 3% increase in medical costs which equal about $144,000.

The county will pay 76% of that, while employees will pay 24%. The bi-weekly increase for single employees covered under the most common plan would be $1.42.

"They live day to day, pay check to pay check, we have several employees with kids, they are getting off the insurance program because they cant afford it," says Patrick Conlay, Public Works Drainage Manager.

The commission planned to vote on the hike Monday. Since so many workers showed up with concerns, commissioners scheduled a special meeting Wednesday to vote. That will give employees more time to understand the changes.
