Shoplifting suspects hit train

Posted: Updated:

Suspected shoplifters trying to outrun police crashed their minivan into a moving train Monday morning in Albany. And it was all caught on the patrol car's dashcam.

Video from an Albany Dougherty Drug Unit officer's car shows the van heading south on Jefferson Street about 11 AM.

A woman accused of shoplifting at the Dollar General on Philema Road sped away from the store with two men. A witness followed the suspects and called 911. The drug agent and a Dougherty County Police Officer followed them at high speeds to 7th Avenue, where they reached a train moving slowly on the tracks.

The driver bails out of the mini van, leaving the other two people inside as it rolls into the train. The driver crawls under the train and runs, the drug agent right behind him.

"There was a witness that had seen the vehicle leaving, or seen the suspects leaving, and gave information to update it. And pointed out the vehicle as our officers turned around on it," said Major Bill Berry, A.D.D.U. Commander.

No one was hurt. The driver was quickly caught. He told drug agents his name is Nathaniel Johnson of Dawson, but jail officials have identified him as 46-year-old Nathaniel Smith.

The accused shoplifter, 38-year-old Vickie Green of Albany, was turned over to Lee County Sheriff's Deputies, and charged with theft by taking. The train was not damaged.
