BOSTON, GA (WALB) - What used to be places of sanctuary are now hotbeds of criminal activity.

"I know personally the church that I attend or am a member of has several substantial locks on the doors and it's because of the change of the times. It used to be you could leave a church unlocked and no one would mess would it. It's just something no one ever did," said Captain Steve Jones.

The small Glasgow Church in Boston is now missing a PA system, has a busted door, and is on the lookout for a missing metal sign which told folks how to get to the place of worship.

Church officials say with the church located about two miles down this dirt road, the metal sign was extremely important to let folks know where they are.

"That sign has been there a long time. As long as I can remember that sign has been there. That sign was put there and taken care of by someone who has passed on now. Its been a landmark in that area for a long time," said Jones.

Investigators say from stealing the air conditioner or in this case a metal sign, criminals are getting desperate.

"Our office has very little sympathy from anyone who would damage or steal from a church. That's stooping about as low as you can get," said Jones.

Investigators are asking the public to be on the lookout for criminal activity around churches, especially those in these rural, less populated areas.

If you have seen the sign, or know anything about the crimes, call the Thomas County Sheriff's Office 225-3300.
