ABAC sponsors Hispanic Heritage Month

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Activities Begin today at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, for Hispanic Heritage Month, coinciding with Sept. 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries.

Food, colorful dances, and a keynote address by Dr. Raymond Moreno will highlight the annual Hispanic Heritage Month activities at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Moreno, who earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed his internal medicine residency at Tampa General Hospital, will speak at the event.

Moreno practiced with Affinity Clinic for many years and then retired from patient care to serve as Vice President of Medical Affairs with Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC). He has recently decided to transition back into clinical practice.

Titled, "Keeping the Dream Alive Today for Tomorrow's Leaders", the activities are sponsored by the Cultura Latina Club, the Office of Multicultural Education Programs, the Office of the Dean of Students, and the ABAC Diversity Affairs Committee.

 

On Sept. 13, students can participate and win prizes in Loteria (Mexican Bingo). On Sept. 17, students can take part in Karaoke Night. Both events begin at 7 p.m. in the J. Lamar Branch Student Center.

The ninth Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration will take place on Sept. 20 from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. at The Meadows at ABAC. The entire community is invited to attend the celebration.

 

 

The celebration will also include a taste of traditional and authentic Hispanic food followed by opening remarks by Dr. Niles Reddick, ABAC Vice President of Academic Affairs. Javier Gonzales, Director of Multicultural Education Programs, will give the historical perspective.

 

The closing event for the month will be a soccer scrimmage on Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. at the ABAC Soccer Field. The national celebration ends on Oct. 12 with the observation of the date that Christopher Columbus discovered America.
