LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

Lee County Commissioners approved a plan Tuesday night aimed at making county workers' salaries more competitive, but the vote was not without controversy.

Commissioner Betty Johnson was so upset commissioners did not approve changes she recommended to a compensation and classification study conducted by an outside consultant, she said she'll step down in November a couple of months before her term ends.

She felt strongly that the chief deputy positions in the Tax Commissioner and Clerk of Superior, Probate, and Magistrate Court offices should all have the same pay grade rating. Johnson said, "I was tax commissioner. I've been in politics in Lee County for over 40 years, and I just knew there were a lot of discrepancies equality of the salaries of the employees of this county, and I wanted to have that corrected."

The consultant studied every county position and classified it into a certain pay grade.

Forty-eight jobs were below the minimum range when compared to other local governments.

The county will spend more than $97,000 a year to bring those salaries up.
