LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

A Lee County commissioner doesn't want blight to bring down the quality of living in one Lee County neighborhood.

Commissioner Rick Muggridge wants the sheriff's office and code enforcement to team up to improve the Winding Way area.

He believes blight is the reason for the recent increase of crime in the area.

He hopes citing and working with residents to keep the area clean will help keep crime out.

"We often see in urban areas that blighted areas lose their integrity and that's why I want to try to come up with some ways to prevent the deterioration of neighborhoods," said Commissioner Muggridge.

Since last January, Lee County Sheriff's, Fire, and EMS have responded to nearly 1600 calls in the area, including 217 described as serious or potentially serious crimes.

Code Enforcement has issued 161 Notice of Violations Warnings this year.
