A manhunt is underway right now near Baconton for an escapee from the Mitchell County Correctional Institute.

Twenty-three-year old David Gilbert walked away from a work detail around 8:30 Tuesday morning.

Gilbert and other prisoners were spraying weeds around some power lines on U.S. 19 near Baconton when Gilbert disappeared.

Deputies found his orange prison T-shirt and his black work boots about 500 yards away, on the other side of some thick woods.

Sheriff's deputies are searching near the Shady Grove mobile home park in Baconton.

Gilbert is a convicted metal thief and has been in Mitchell C. I. since July 19th.

Investigators say he may be headed to Albany.

Gilbert is black, 5'8" and 165 pounds.
