Hunters all over Georgia grabbed their hunting gear and headed into the woods over the weekend for the start of bow season.
The Department of Natural Resources wants to make sure you are safe while hunting especially from tree stands.
Hunters spent the weekend searching for deer in the woods as archery season began.
"This is what hunters should look for, because the deer pretty much follow the same pattern every morning and every evening and they can find these game trails going through the woods, and it would be a good spot to try to set up a ladder stand up on it," said | Randy James, DNR Ranger First Class.
But before you set up that deer stand, or even head out into the woods, you need to make safety a priority.
"This tree right here, it would be a pretty good tree, it is pretty big in size, it is sturdy, so it would be able to safely handle a tree stand being put on it," said James.
DNR Ranger Randy James says the most common hunting injuries are caused by deer stands.
"Most of the time it is from falling out of the deer stand whether it is from not suing the safety harness, or not using a pull rope to pull their weapon up," said James.
James says it is also a good idea to have a hunting buddy before tracking out into the woods.
"A lot of these rural areas don't have good cell service and if they fall sometimes nobody knows so we tell everybody that when they go hunting to let somebody know when they are leaving, where they are going to be at, when they are going to be back so if something happens they can call us," said James.
James says if everyone abides by the hunting ten commandments there would be no hunting injuries.
"Be aware of your target and what is beyond it, treat every fire arm as if it was loaded, keep your hand off the trigger until you are actually ready to shoot," said James.
These tips can not only ensure a great hunting season, but they could end up saving your life or someone else's.
Firearms season starts October 13th.
From then on, all deer and hog hunters must wear at least 500 square inches of florescent orange, to be visible to other hunters.
