After much success in its two career meetings against Wingate University, the Bulldogs paid Albany State back and handed the Rams a 37-9 defeat in North Carolina. Wingate turned three ASU turnovers in points and had a 21-3 lead at halftime.
A weather delay held the game up at the start of the third quarter but failed to slow down the Wingate attack. Rams' quarterback David Kooi went just 13-36 for 232 yards and two interceptions. Reigning SIAC offensive player of the week Nathan Hoyte was stifled on 10 carries for 44 yards. ASU seemed to abandon the run mid-way through the third quarter. Former Mitchell County star Jesse Atkins was one of the only bright spots for ASU scoring on a 62 yard catch and run for ASU's only touchdown on the day. Atkins finished with 5 catches for 142 yards.
Wingate jumped out to a 21-0 lead before ASU kicker Zachary Holley connected on a 26 yard field goal as time expired to end the first half. Wingate got right back to scoring on a 3 yard strike from Nallenweg to Josh Clawson at the beginning of the third quarter.
After the Atkins 62 yard touchdown catch for ASU, the Rams regained possession but a Kooi's interception gave the ball back to the Bulldogs. Wingate QB Robbie Nallenweg hooked up with Josh Clawson for his 4th touchdown of the day.
Albany State falls to 1-1 on the season and will play at Elizabeth City State in North Carolina on September 15th.
