LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

The Lee County High School Football team honored former Trojan Lance Corporal Steve Sutton who was killed in Afghanistan in May.

During a memorial service before Friday's game, Sutton's number 60 was retired.

His jersey was encased and given to his widow, Toni Sutton.

She said she's grateful for the support from the community her husband loved dearly.

"He's my hero and he loved Lee County football with a passion. Every time he would come home he would want to come and watch them or come watch practice and all he talked about was football. I'm very honored for them to do this," said Sutton.

"For the first home game, we just felt like it was something that we needed to do. He sacrificed his life for this country and we're all grateful for that. I wasn't fortunate enough to coach him because I came after he was here, but I heard great things about him and wish I had the opportunity to coach him," said Lee County High Football Head Coach Dean Fabrizio.

Decals were also put on the back of every Lee County player's helmet. They'll remain there all season to honor Sutton.
