CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
A group of protesters marched into the middle of uptown Charlotte, on the final day of the Democratic National Convention, just ahead of the President's speech.
The march was called the final march of the DNC. The group of protesters started marching around 7:30 p.m., with a plan to hold a rally at 5th and College streets.
Protesters were met by a police blockade at the intersection of Stonewall and South Tryon Street. After nearly 20 minutes, they were able to negotiate a move to Trade and Tryon streets in the middle of uptown Charlotte.
It was the first time protesters were able to get into the middle of the city.
Around 8:30 p.m., protesters sat down in the middle of Trade and Tryon streets, after standing in the intersection for nearly 30 minutes.
The group was stopped by officers again along Tryon and E. 6th streets where they began to chanting "fight back, fight back."
The group turned around and began marching back down Tryon around 9 p.m. They stopped for a while at the intersection of Stonewall and College streets.
Protesters stopped in front of the "free speech zone" and started yelling about the lack of free speech at the DNC.
They then began to burn paper, with the police oath on it, and shouted "this is you, you're burning."
Protesters returned to Marshall Park at 10:15 p.m., no arrests were made during the night march.
However, earlier in the day, at least ten people were arrested in protests.
A group of six protesters, split into two groups of three, sat silently in the intersection, on top of an environmental protest banner.
Police gave the group 10 minutes to disperse, telling them they would be arrested if they did not comply. The protesters still didn't speak and they didn't move.
After ten minutes, officers started to arrest the protesters. Each one went limp as they were cuffed. Officers had to carry them out of the intersection.
CMPD sent a press release about the arrests - stating it was a peaceful demonstration and the arrests were for impeding traffic. The following were arrested during that demonstration:
Amelia Campbell, 22; Audrey Campbell, 22; Richard French, 39; Matthew Goodsell, 56; Christina Lee Mounce, 26; and Michael Joseph Stewart, 25
Around 3:30 p.m., officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrested three people in front of 100 W. Trade Street during a demonstration.
Two of those people were taken to jail.
A third person was also arrested during this incident and transported to the hospital for a non-incident related medical condition. Once she has been released from the hospital, she is expected to be transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
Additionally, at approximately 4:00 p.m., officers with the CMPD arrested an individual responsible for hanging a banner at 200 S. College Street.
