Hunters need to protect against West Nile

Posted: Updated:
LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Dove season is underway and with hunters outside a lot. It's possible for a dove to get west Nile if it is bitten by a mosquito, but doves cannot pass the virus onto a hunter.

If you handle a dove you should wear gloves. It's also recommended hunters wear insect repellant before heading out, any type is fine, but some hunting stores offer certain types with no smell.

"Some of those different types of bug sprays can irritate your skin, so Thermacell is a good way to go because it builds a barrier around you," said Jackie Sizemore, owner of Backwoods Outdoors.

Hunters should also wear long pants, and long sleeve shirts as well.
