More of today's college students are transferring to other schools before earning a degree.

The National Student Clearinghouse study shows one-third of students transfer before getting a degree.

Many students say they start off in smaller colleges closer to home to save money.

That's what one Darton State College student, who plans to transfer to Georgia Southern, told us is the case for him.

"Why go and pay $7,000 a year for housing and food and stuff when you can just get pretty much the same education and classes every college will have," said Richard Smith.

Over the last 5 years, there was nearly a 25% increase in students transferring into a University System of Georgia college.

Nearly 41,000 students transferred into a University System school last fall.
