The state plans to keep a closer eye on Dougherty County Schools after ordering the system to repay tens of thousands of dollars in misspent grant money.

The Georgia Department of Education ordered the school system to repay, reclassify, or provide supporting documentation for more than $134,000in Title I expenditures.

The Title I programs division director says the state likely will monitor Dougherty County next year.

"There were some items that were not even in their budget, which means to us that internal controls may not have been as good as they should have been. And so that's what causes concern for us

Dougherty County schools must pay up or reclassify the money by September 28th.

The DOE will set up a payment plan if they system doesn't want to make a lump sum payment.
