The roads were busy this weekend with people passing through south Georgia for Labor Day. But high gas prices dug deep into people's pockets when filling up the tank.
It's not a hard decision. $3.77 or $3.72, you go where you can get the most bang for your buck. But people traveling through south Georgia this weekend had a tougher time finding just the right price.
"Most places that we've found have been anywhere up between 3.75 and up a little bit. This is probably the cheapest one we found coming back," says traveler, Robert Whitman.
Robert and Kathy Whitman spent their labor day weekend driving from Jacksonville, Florida up to Atlanta to visit their daughter and they say the gas prices are outrageous.
"I think it's ridiculous. When we have gasoline in reserve, why is it this high," says Mrs. Whitman.
And they're not alone, other travelers like Migel Jesus and his family drove all the way from Tampa and he says the trip cost him big bucks.
"It's incredible, its way too much, and I'm spending like 180 dollars just to go back and forth, it's a lot of money," says Jesus.
But the record high gas prices aren't keeping folks at home. One Exxon in Tifton says they were busy all weekend and expect just the same on Monday.
The Exxon Manager says, "Every weekend is busy only because we are close to 75 highway, but whenever it's something like labor day or fourth of July, we get really busy."
The national average is $3.80 per gallon; that's up 13 cents from a year ago and the highest price ever recorded during Labor Day weekend. And the Whitmans' say they aren't shocked by the high prices.
"The off shore oil rigs shut down for the weekend so they raise prices. Plus it's a holiday weekend, they always raise prices on holiday weekends."
