Community gathers to stop the violence

Posted: Updated:

A stop the violence rally is going on in East Albany. Community members are gathered in the same parking lot where a man was shot dead and four others wounded early Sunday in gang violence. They are taking a stand against crime.

People are gathered here because it's where a shootout left a gang leader dead Sunday morning and four others wounded.

They are all wearing white to symbolize surrendering to violence

Law officers say members of the Rattlers, gunned down Dontavious Luke, the leader of the Southside Bloods.

And four arrests have been made, there's community concern about violent retaliation.

Police across Albany and Dougherty County are on high alert and these community members say it's time to come together and end violence.

"We are active members of this community from different walks of life and safety is important because we have people who look up to us, and people we look up to, safety as a whole from all side of town should be spoken on," says Richard Brigham, Event Organizer/Head&OPM Entertainment.

Organizers say crime affects the whole community's hope for the future. Police do not want people to be afraid. But as always if you see any suspicious activity, call 911.

Law officers and school leaders held a news conference this morning to talk about the gang threats and to assure the public that security is heightened and the community is safe.
