CAMILLA, GA (WALB) -
South Georgia cities and counties are preparing for possible trouble from Tropical Storm Isaac as it could hit the Florida Gulf Coast and impact South Georgia early next week.
Camilla Public works employees smoothed out the final touches as they installed two new drain pipes near Bay Street.
"The old pipes were in such bad condition it restricted water flow underneath this road," said Camilla Utilities Supervisor Larry Crumb.
The two new pipes will play a vital role if Tropical Storm Isaac dumps heavy rain in Camilla.
"The majority of city drains through this ditch and back out of town so putting these bigger and newer pipes in, we can handle more water and get it out of town faster," said Crumb.
That's not all workers are doing to prepare for the storm.
Crumb says crews have been working all week clearing out debris from drain pipes that may cause backups and massive flooding.
"We have guys going out right now cleaning pine straw and leave and stuff like that out of the storm drains and cleaning any draining ditches so the water will flow," said Crumb.
With most of the land being hard and dry because of the drought, Crumb say that will actually make his job harder when the rains come.
"When the rain comes really hard and fast the ground can't soak it up any faster than normal even if it is a little dry. When the ground is dry like it is now, it won't soak any of it up. It'll just run off," said Crumb.
All of these preparations should help reduce problems if Tropical Storm Isaac dumps heavy rain in South Georgia.
