CORDELE, GA (WALB) -
The Dollar General on 7th Street in Cordele was open for business Thursday but last night it was the scene of a robbery turned shooting.
"I went there to get some milk. I was in there for 3 or 4 minutes talking to the girls," said business owner Mike Barbagni.
He never imagined that minutes later one of those clerks would be on the receiving end of a bullet just across the street from his business.
"I went to the Pizza Hut and came back and it happened while I was walking back to my store," he said.
Police 21-year-old Gregory Foreman is the masked gunman who came in the store just before 8 o'clock demanding money. During the robbery they say he shot cashier Lakatia King in the thigh.
"We understand the clerk was moving a little slow getting the cash register open. We don't know if these were warning shots. We don't know if he shot her intentionally because she was moving slow," said Cordele Police Sgt. Jeremy Taylor.
King was taken to Crisp Regional Hospital and is expected to be ok.
The robber ran after the shooting with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Detectives arrested Foreman around midnight at a home on 10th Street.
This is the second robbery in less than 2 weeks in Cordele in which shots were fired.
Last week two armed robbers fired shots that narrowly missed a store clerk at Yours Supermarket. They're still at large.
" I understand nerves are going to kick in, like in this situation. But try your best to keep your wits about you. Get a good description. Do what they say. The money is not worth it." said Sgt. Taylor.
Barbagni says as a victim of robbery himself, "It's bad for the community. It's bad for business. It's bad for everybody."
Foreman is in the Crisp County Jail charged with armed robbery but faces other charges including aggravated assault.
Police say there is surveillance video that will help their case
Detectives don't believe this robbery is connected to the one at Yours Supermarket
