TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Officials in Tifton are pushing a movement to get people to take pride in their community by recycling. They say cleaning up city streets can actually bring people in Tift County together.

This appears to be a lot of trash in Tifton, but, it is actually an educational tool for city and county officials.

"We have so many people who don't know about recycling in the african-american community," said Tift County Commissioner Melissa Chevers. "So, we just want to bring some awareness to them."

These 21 large cans are full of plastic, paper, glass, and aluminum that dozens of volunteers gathered Saturday. The Think Green Tour started with management at Perfect Music Records.

"To come together to create a tour where we could clean up at the same time," said Traebean Hammock with Perfect Music Records. "But, also, I wanted to give my gift and the rest of these artists' gifts from Perfect Music Records gifts, which is music."

They are one of many organizations trying to make recycling a way of life. It will literally lift a burden off some residents.

"We had about 80 tires that were dumped in an elderly ladies yard," Chevers said. "Rudy's tires was so gracious to take those tires. He is going to take those tires off."

Perfect Music Records is ending the night with a concert at the American Legion Post 559, they love seeing a cleaner Tifton.

"That is part of our job is going out to the community and reaching out to the community. Seeing young kids or people doing anything positive is just a way of life," said Curtis Akins with the Tifton American Legion Post 559.

Kids in the area will now be able to take more pride knowing a strategy is in place to recycle all of this, and more.

"One street at time," Chevers said. "And that is what we have to do. You can't take a big bite out of an elephant. If you're going to eat an elephant, you're going to do it in little bits. That's what my dream is."

They are organizing another street cleaning next month.

The concert at the American Legion is going on right now in Tifton. The Think Green Tour will go to six other cities in South Georgia after Tifton.
