CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

The Port of Savannah is one of the busiest in the nation. And congestion on the roadways around the port has forced Georgia to find new ways to move freight from the port to highways around the state.

One of those ways is to use Intermodal centers and one of those just opened in Cordele. The city's location on the rail line leading out of Savannah and along Interstate 75 made it an ideal location for the center which is seeing trains twice a week.

The center welcomed its first train on December 1st of last year, and is working on ways to become better able to receive even more goods.

"We work very closely with the Port Authority and the railroads that convey the containers back and forth," said Jonathan Lafevers of Cordele Intermodal Services. "We've got some exciting things in the pipeline. They're going to make the service a little more robust from what it is right now, and hopefully gain some efficiencies over what we're currently doing."

Lafevers says that the Intermodal center has indirectly created hundreds of jobs and more are expected in the coming years as the port of Savannah grows.
