Valuables in cars are tempting for thieves

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Stealing stuff from an unlocked car is one of the easiest crimes a crook can commit Police in Thomasville are reminding folks never to leave anything of value in their cars after a rash of break-ins.

Wallets, cameras, loose change are just a few of the items taken during a rash of car break-ins of the last few days in Thomasville.

"Glenwood Drive, Edgewood Drive, Fontaine Drive, on one side of town," said Thomasville Police Lt. Eric Hampton. "On the other side of town we have Gordon Avenue, Hill Street, and the Loomis Street area, where we've been hit pretty hard with the entering autos."

And while this is usually a crime committed at night, police say folks also need to be careful during the day.

"When you're going to work, make sure your car is secure. Even if you're out shopping, secure your vehicle. Secure your items. Take all items out of plain view," Hampton said.

Police say the most important tip is to never leave anything of value in plain sight, because if a thief sees it, he or she is going to break in whether the car is locked or not. They are not sure whether they are looking for one, two, or a group of suspects.

"We're really not sure at this time if they are actually related, other than the fact that they are in the same neighborhood. They are close together. That's the only thing that would give us an idea that they could be related," Hampton said.

And police say the economy is not necessarily to blame. "A lot of times we put things on the economy however people just commit crimes. So it's our job to locate them and get them off the street."

Police also want to remind folks to make sure their windows and sunroofs are completely closed because even the smallest crack could invite a thief.

If you know anything about these crimes, Thomasville Police want you to call their Crime Stoppers hotline at 227-3305.
