We continue to follow a developing story about an early morning fire in Lee County. The Lee County Fire Department is investigating an overnight blaze at the Stardust 2 Carwash on Highway 19 North.
The business was closed when the fire started and no one was hurt. It took firefighters less than 15 minutes to have the blaze under control.
Captain Harcrow with the Lee County Fire Department says someone from the Three Squares Diner called in the fire just before 5am. Firefighters told me they saw light smoke coming from the attic as they arrived.
A short time later, flames were coming from the roof. Two Waffle House waitresses saw the flames and smelled smoke.
"At first we smelled smoke and thought our business was on fire. Then we looked out the window and saw flames coming from the car wash," said Waitress Mary Jenkins.
Lee County deputies were on hand to direct traffic, because fire trucks blocked one lane on Highway 19.
Captain Harcrow says the attic above the automated car wash line is what caught fire. At this point, they don't believe arson was the cause of the fire.
