Sabbs pays Dougherty Co. School Board, Maschke not happy

Posted: Updated:

After one Dougherty County School Board member demanded money from a contractor he says did not meet contractual obligations, that company decided to pay up.

Before Monday's School Board meeting, Darrell Sabbs and Associates handed over a $6,000 check to the school superintendent.

Board member David Maschke says the system paid the company to conduct 14 sessions of a Saturday academy, but they only provided 12.

Maschke believes Sabbs still owes the system $5,000 to $7,000 more.

Sabbs' attorney says the check written Monday was not an admission that his client was overpaid.

"Sabbs and Associates has now obviously admitted they were overpaid, but the second point is we have to get to the bottom of how much he was overpaid. Clearly $6,000 is not the total amount," said Maschke.

"I don't think that (the check) says anything because whenever you have litigation, people do that all the time and they do it for different reasons. Some people do it because it might costs more money to defend than it does to just get it behind them," said Sabbs' attorney Maurice King, Jr.

Maschke says, for now, he'll leave it up to the Superintendent to handle getting the rest of the money he says the system is owed.

Maschke says if that money is not repaid, he'll bring it up and try to get the board to pursue further action to collect it.
