Family Dollar robbed at knife point, suspect arrested

Posted: Updated:

Police in Leesburg are using K-9's to search for evidence in a robbery of Family Dollar.

Around 10 Sunday night, police say Ramon Ortiz walked into the store on US 19 and held a knife to the back of a clerk.

Investigators say he forced the manager to empty the safe and made off a money bag which he dumped somewhere in the woods behind the store.

We were there as officers on 4-wheelers and a DCP K-9 unit searched for the bag near Lee County Public housing where police arrested Ortiz shortly after the robbery.

"We went over to his house and did locate him. We also located the knife he used and the clothing he was wearing," said Leesburg Police Sgt. James Vick.

Ortiz is being held in the Lee County Jail on armed robbery charges.
