Roads safer for drivers, not pedestrians

Posted: Updated:

Georgia roads are getting safer for drivers but not for pedestrians.

The number of vehicle collisions is way down over the last 10 years, but more pedestrians have been hit by cars every year since 2001.

In 2010, pedestrians made up nearly 14% of roadway deaths in Georgia. Law enforcers say the number is so high because drivers are distracted.

"Anytime you have distractions in the vehicle," said Captain Tom Jackson with Dougherty County Police. "Your primary function needs to be operating that motor vehicle. You need to do that one task. Unfortunately, we try to multi-task in vehicles. That is what is resulting in collisions with pedestrians, with bicyclists, and unfortunately sometimes, other vehicles. "

Captain Jackson says most drivers who hit a pedestrian claim they just didn't see anyone. He says that shows the need for paying closer attention.
