VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Valdosta State University is mourning the death of a student athlete. Freshman Tajay Hoppines drowned in the Suwannee River in north Florida Wednesday while on a trip with VSU's cross country team.

Hoppines was recently recruited to run for VSU from Mill Creek High School in Dacula, Georgia. The team was in Live Oak for a team building trip. VSU officials say Hoppines and his teammates decided to swim across the river to get to a tree rope, when he was caught in the current and went under.

"Even though he was an incoming freshman and he had not even started school yet, he was a member of the family and certainly any time something like this happens it's a tragic loss, and our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to his family," said Herb Reinhard, VSU Athletic Director.

A dive team recovered the body last night. The university will provide counseling services to his teammates and other students. Reinhard says the cross country team is taking a break from training right now.
