Drill tests hospitals' response to tornadoes

Posted: Updated:

If devastating tornadoes hit south Georgia, area hospitals and emergency agencies are now better prepared to handle the disaster.

Seven hospitals and six EMS agencies from seven south Georgia counties took part in a full-scale disaster exercise Thursday tonight.

Numerous mock patients were brought into Phoebe Putney Hospital to test the staff. Phoebe's Chief Compliance Officer Brad Hallford said, "What we're trying to test is the ability of the staff of the hospital to set up a command center effectively to communicate with all the staff and make sure we're having patients come through the system as quick and as efficiently as we can and we take the best care of them we can."

The scenario included multiple tornadoes touching down in several counties that produced mass casualties.

It was designed to stretch the capacity of each hospital's resources to identify potential gaps so improvements can be made.

Phoebe officials stress the drill did not disrupt their normal operations.
