VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

As VSU students move in this week, the university will see 300 fewer freshman than last year.

The University System of Georgia announced this week that the state's higher education system is experiencing a rare enrollment decline this year. VSU officials say they've also raised SAT standards for new students.

"The reason being is because we've raised our admissions standards, so it's actually a good problem to have, however we've had to compensate for that by making sure we have more of the upperclassmen this year," said Dr. Tom Hardy, Director of Housing and Resident Life.

The university had to open more dorm rooms to a total of 1,400 upperclassmen to fill that gap. Only 1,600 freshmen will be living on campus.
