TIFTON, GA (WALB) -
For most of Wednesday, parts of Highway 82 in Tifton were closed as DOT officials and Georgia State Patrol Troopers directed traffic around the main roadway.
The highway was reopened around 10 o'clock Wednesday evening.
"I understand we need rain, but not that much," said displaced resident Valerie McKoon.
McKoon woke up to quite a surprise Wednesday morning as she and her kids were about to walk out of the door.
"We got up about 6 this morning to get the kids ready for school and when they went to go to the bus stop, we realized that we were about a little above knee high in water."
Now, the American Red Cross is putting up McKoon and several other families in temporary housing for the night.
"At the moment, without looking at my figures, we've got approximately 10 families that we've put in a motel, helped with overnight lodging and food," said Cheryl Edwards with the American Red Cross.
The Tifton Health Department has also steeped in.
Officials say free tetanus shots will be given to those living or working in the areas affected by flooding.
"In standing water there can be things they don't see. There can be diseases that can occur because of cuts," said Lori Scarberry with the Tifton Health Department.
"We can't even get into our house to get our stuff," said McKoon.
As for McKoon and her family, they must now figure out a plan moving forward.
"They said we're supposed to get about three more inches of rain," said McKoon. "I'm hoping for the best because I don't want my stuff messed up," she continued.
Hopefully it doesn't.
The American Red Cross will reassess tomorrow and will open a shelter if necessary.
