LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

For the second time this summer, a Lee County swimming hole is shut down. This time it's Sandy Beach Park. The county closed it because of illegal dumping.

Code enforcement has seen more people abusing the creeks in Lee County. They're not sure why, but it's ultimately ruining things for everyone who enjoys the water.

It's the perfect place to cool off on a hot summer day. But swimmers won't have that option anymore thanks to people who litter..

"Mostly beer cans, drink bottles, snack items, diapers. It's numerous piles of trash," said Lee Co. Code Enforcer Ben Roberts.

People who live near county-owned Sandy Beach park complained about the trash. County officials had no choice but to close it to swimmers temporarily.

"It seems like after the weekends went by, they would call about the amount of trash and the noises that were occurring," said Roberts. "They don't care. They don't pick it up they just leave it there. This whole summer has been busy for code enforcement as far us getting complaints along the Kinchafoonee Creek.'

This comes after the popular blue hole underwent a major cleanup after someone dumped roofing nails in the water.

Code Enforcement says they realize not everyone causes problems, but some folks need to straighten up their act.

"It always a few people that ruin it for everybody. Basically this is our community. It may not be your property. You may not be responsible for cleaning it up. But keep it clean so everybody can have a nice place to come hang out," Roberts said.

For now no trespassing signs remain posted. No timetable as to when the park will reopen.

A volunteer sponsored river's alive group will be holding a cleanup at the park on August 25th.

The gate at the park has been locked and anyone caught trespassing will could face a citation or arrest.
