The Albany Police Department reached out to the community, Tuesday night, to help get kids ready for school and make neighborhoods safer.
Hundreds of people showed up at the Civic Center for National Night Out.
Sponsors gave away school supplies and provided free food and activities for those who came out.
One grandparent told us these types of events are needed for children.
"It helps the kids a whole lot because in my day we didn't have events like this when I was coming up. So it's good for the kids and everything. Albany really does a lot for the kids in the community all the time," said Gene Roberts.
National Night Out is a community-police partnership and has been held the first Tuesday of every August around the country since 1984.
